Flashback: Aaliyah

Aaliyah’s life ended early but her legacy stayed with us. The New York born artist started her career as early as ten years old when she sang on a TV show with Gladys Knight and at twelve, she was already signed onto Jive Records. At age 17, she already had 2 platinum albums: her debut, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number and her sophomore album, One in a Million. In 2000 she starred in her first film Romeo Must Die. She died at the age of 22 in 2001 after filming one of her music videos in a plane crash. After her death, her music was still a growing success with features on current artist’s songs and posthumous sales. She has around 32 million album sales to this day.

The 90’s R&B singer wasn’t only known for her music, dancing, modeling, and acting but also for her fashion trends. The singer’s fashion was so iconic, that when the biographical film came out last year, fans and even people who knew her at the time were upset when they didn’t get her outfits down perfectly. Aaliyah was the queen of abs, showing hers off with almost every outfit with her signature style of crop tops, boxers, and baggy men’s pants. She basically made women wearing menswear a thing in the 90’s. She wore a lot of Tommy Hilfiger being that she was the face for Tommy Jeans and modeled for them multiple times.

Aaliyah loved wearing all white.

Even though her signature style were usually baggy pants, she still had really feminine looks for nicer events like red carpet events.

Aaliyah’s style influenced all of the 90’s and she even influences fashion today. You could see artists like Rihanna, Zendaya, Jhene Aiko, and many others rocking similar styles and outfits. She is still a muse for designers like Alexander Wang and Balenciaga. Current street style today started from Aaliyah.
